WELCOME TO GYMPIE WOMEN’S HEALTH CENTRE
Empowering Women to make informed choices that enhance their health and well-being.
The Gympie Women’s Health Centre is a community based, not-for-profit organisation offering assistance for women, by women. Formed in 1993 to present a submission for joint state and federal funding for a Women’s Health Centre, and the Gympie and District Women’s Health Group was officially incorporated in 1994.
This was largely due to a joint effort by the Gympie Zonta and Quota clubs, who also formed the management committee. It was felt very strongly that this was to be a service based on feminist principles, by women, for women.
The move to 10 Lawrence Street came in December 1999, followed by the move to 21 Alfred Street nine years later in December, 2008 - where we have remained since.
Funded as a primary health care service, demand for counselling was immediate. Emotional and mental health issues were the most common presenting issue, followed closely by issues around abuse and domestic and family violence.
Demand for health promotion, support, information, counselling, groups, workshops, referrals and advocacy in a supportive and accessible environment remains constant.
